Famous Faces of Peru
It is visited by thousands of visitors every year who come to experience the famous landscapes for themselves as they follow the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. But walking Peru’s spectacular mountainous route is not the only attraction this fascinating country holds as she is also home to Lima, one of South America’s most beautiful cities. As well, Peru is a haven for history lovers who are fascinated by her ancient Mayan culture, which runs so deep, that one can only hope to scratch the surface on a brief holiday.
But aside from her famous cultural attractions, it may be surprising to learn that Peru has also produced some very successful exports in the form of some well-known people. So as you’re walking Peru’s beautiful capital Lima keep your eyes open for some famous expats.
on their holidays back home…
Benjamin Bratt
In the late nineties, unless you resided under a rather large rock or didn’t own a television, you would know the name Benjamin Bratt. Most famous for his break-out role in the long running smash TV series Law and Order, Bratt become a household name and the object of millions of women’s affection. His heart-throb status caught the eye of Hollywood’s biggest female star, Julia Roberts, and they dated for three years. These days he is a family man and, after several successful movies, is rumoured to be reprising his most famous role on Law and Order. While today you’re more likely to see Benjamin walking the red carpet than walking Peru’s Inca Trail, he is a regular visitor to Lima where he still has family.
Mario Testino
Even if the name isn’t familiar, chances are, whether you know it or not, you have seen celebrity photographer Mario Testino’s work. He has photographed some of the most beautiful women in the world and the stars clamour to have their portraits taken by this innovative fashion photographer. Born in Lima, Testino reportedly showed his creative side before he was even walking. Peru’s most famous photographer attended university in Lima studying the arts, before moving to London where he found his fame, and fortune. Some of his best known work is an incredibly beautiful series of black and white shots featuring the late Princess Diana; relaxed and as the world had never seen her before. Ah yes, you say – THAT guy.
Paddington Bear
Not strictly a person, but certainly a celebrity, not everyone is aware of the fact that one of Britain’s best-loved characters actually originated from “Deepest Darkest Peru.” Paddington, the creation of an English cameraman turned writer in 1965, was brought up by his Aunt Lucy when he was tragically orphaned at a very young age. When he was older, his Aunt, now living in Lima, wanted to help Paddington to have a better life and helped him stowaway on a ship bound for England. When he arrived into London’s Paddington station with the now-famous sign around his little furry neck, “Please look after this bear, thank you”; his adoptive parents Mr and Mrs Brown couldn’t resist. Now we all know Paddington Bear is a figment of someone’s imagination but if, while walking Peru, you hear someone calling “Pastuso” (his original Peruvian name), take a second look – it could just be Aunt Lucy.
